The fundamental principle of an inverter is to rapidly switch the direction of a DC input to create an AC output. It does this using a series of electronic switches, typically transistors.

What is a solar inverter and why do I need one?

A solar inverter is the brain of your solar PV system. Its primary job is to convert the direct current (DC) electricity generated by your solar panels into usable alternating current (AC) power for your home appliances and for the national grid. Without an inverter, the electricity from your panels is useless to your home.

What are the different types of inverters available in Ireland?

The main types are:

  • String Inverters: The most common and cost-effective option for homes without significant shading. Panels are wired together in “strings” and connected to a single inverter.
  • Microinverters: These are installed on each individual panel, maximising the output of each panel independently. They are an excellent choice for roofs with complex layouts or shading issues.
  • Hybrid Inverters: These inverters combine the function of a standard inverter with the ability to manage and charge a home battery, making them ideal for homeowners who want to store excess energy.
What size inverter do I need for my house in Ireland?

A common size for an average Irish home is a 5kW inverter, as it can handle the typical peak power demand. While the grant is for the full solar PV system installation, it directly helps with the overall cost, including the inverter. The grant amount is based on the system’s capacity, with a maximum value and for systems of 4kWp and above

What are the regulations for inverters connecting to the grid in Ireland?

Connecting a solar system to the national grid requires adherence to regulations set by ESB Networks (ESBN). For single-phase installations, there is a strict output current limit of 25 Amps. While many inverters are rated at 6kW, they must be compliant with this 25A limit, often through built-in hardware or firmware.
