Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Ireland?
Ireland has significantly relaxed planning restrictions on solar panel installations. Previously, strict limits of 12 square meters for homes and 50 for businesses hindered solar adoption. These caps have been lifted, empowering homeowners, farmers, businesses, and communities to harness the sun’s energy more freely.
However, certain exceptions apply.
Properties near airports or in sensitive areas, such as solar safeguarding zones, are restricted to a maximum of 300 square meters. This limit also applies to apartment blocks. Furthermore, buildings within architectural conservation areas may still require planning permission due to heritage protection.
For free-standing or wall-mounted solar panels, residences can install up to 25 square meters without needing planning permission. Other property types, such as industrial and agricultural sites, have a higher limit of 75 square meters.
It is crucial to consult your local authority for specific guidelines and potential exemptions.
